Upper House is developing a cutting-edge Fellows program to help students integrate their academic studies with their Christian faith and vocation. This program will launch publicly in Fall 2020. To help hone the program, we are inviting students to participate in a Spring 2020 Pilot Cohort.
Students in the Pilot Cohort will engage with rich content that aligns with the aim of the Fellows Program: to fill a gap in the life of the mind for Christian students at UW-Madison. The new Fellows Program and Pilot Cohort will be led by Dr. Daniel Hummel, Program Curator for Academic Communities at Upper House, and Dr. Eric Carlsson, Upper House Fellows Program Director and Lecturer in History and Religious Studies at UW-Madison. The Program will engage cohorts of 10-12 students biweekly around scholarship that draws on multi-ethnic and global perspectives, selected to enhance students’ growth in three areas:
- Knowledge: exploring the Bible and the world
- Community: bridging difference through genuine relationships
- Vocation: connecting our gifts and passions to the world’s needs
What might Pilot Cohort students expect?
Pilot students will have an opportunity to explore the content of the formal Fellows program and engage questions like:
- What role should Christian faith play in academic study and the life of the mind?
- How should the Bible inform our vocational and missional callings?
- How can we become leaders who advocate a holistic understanding of the gospel?
Each week there will be an average of one hour of reading and video viewing. Each meeting will include a time of worship, a meal hosted by Upper House, and community discussion around the assigned readings and videos.
Pilot students will receive a $500 stipend for their participation.

Discussions will occur every other Monday night, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, during Spring semester 2020. In addition, there will be one day-long retreat.
