Editing our DNA: Exciting Possibilities and Important Ethical Implications

Genome editing has been in lab development and imagined in the arena of science fiction for decades. But with dramatic advances in recent years (CRISPR/Cas9), there is now renewed interest in the topic, along with a growing number of ethical questions. Although most people have heard of this technology, most do not fully grasp its transformative power and its inherent ethical implications. Praveen Sethupathy is a leading geneticist who will share his insights and help us explore a range of ethical issues as we approach a new frontier in scientific advancement.
Dr. Praveen Sethupathy is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he directs a research laboratory focused on genomics and human disease. He received a B.A. in computer science from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in genomics and computational biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a postdoctoral fellow in genomics under the mentorship of Dr. Francis Collins at the National Institutes of Health. In 2011, he was selected by Genome Technology as one of the nation’s top 25 rising professors in genomics. Dr. Sethupathy has published over 80 articles in leading scientific journals, such as Science, Nature Communications, PNAS, and Genome Biology, and has served as a reviewer for over 30 scientific journals. Praveen’s work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation, and several Cornell University grant programs. Recent honors include an award for outstanding mentorship and teaching. Praveen has been an invited speaker on topics related to science & Christian faith for the Veritas Forum on college campuses and has served on the advisory council on the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) dialogue on science, ethics, and religion. He currently serves on the board of the BioLogos Foundation and is a part of their Speakers program called BioLogos Voices. Praveen lives in Brooktondale, NY, with his wife Rebecca and their three children.
