The collected teachings of Jesus in Matthew 5-7—the Sermon on the Mount—may be the most radical spiritual and ethical instructions ever given. Including familiar passages like the Beatitudes (5:3-12), the Lord’s Prayer (6:9-13), and quite a few “quotable quotes,” the Sermon on the Mount brings forward the challenges and promises of persisting in the life of faith.

The Upper House Fellows Program invites all students (grad and undergrad) to participate in this study, the purpose of which is threefold: to engage the passage as a whole unit of thought; to read and learn together; and to consider the ways in which our lives are, or are not, aligned with the values of God’s kingdom.

DETAILS

Format and Approach

This study will be conducted in the “manuscript style”—meaning the text will be laid out double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 pages, without any chapter or verse numbers or paragraph breaks. Each participant will receive a set of colored pens to mark up the text as they study. We will apply an inductive approach, cycling through stages of observation, interpretation, and application. Approximately half our time will be spent in observation, as we read the text with care, collect our questions, and share observations.

Schedule

We will gather at Upper House on Mondays, 4:30-6:00 PM, for seven weeks—

Week 1 – May 15

Week 2 – May 22

Week 3 – June 5

Week 4 – June 12

Week 5 – June 19

Week 6 – July 10

Week 7 – July 17
